OUTRAGEOUS parties and the distribution of alcohol
The mood of the 1920's was expressed through parties and entertainment. The parties of the 1920's, often called whist parties or dances, were usually announced by brightly coloured cards stuck in the grille of apartment house elevators. The invitations would be extremely exciting and well designed. The parties included jazz music, new dances, new styles and also alcohol which was actually banned in America. Jazz was originally created by African Americans but it became widely popular in the US and around the world. Some famous musicians from the era were Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. New dances were introduced such as the Charleston were performed in the music halls and the clubs. Even tho there were lots of alcohol fueled parties alcohol was actually banned because this was during the prohibition era. The law was introduced in the 1920's and it was illegal to sell alcohol until the law was lifted in 1933. speakeasies were illegal bars that operated at the time and were often run by gangsters. This was a way for people to drink and have fun without getting caught.
